lecture 25

Obscenity can be looked at in many different ways.  I think that its kind of odd that depending on where you live the way people view pornography and what they consider pornography varies.  In this lecture you talked about how there were states that banned certain books from even being placed in libraries even though a number of people wanted to check those books out.  I don’t get why they won’t allow people to purchase or borrow those books from a library it is their own preference on what they want to read or look at.  No one should have a say in what person is or isn’t allowed to read or look at.  It just boggles my mind that certain states will do that with books.  Along with not being able to look at books I thought it was absurd that people had charges pressed on them because of paintings that they painted.  Why is there such a problem with painting a nude girl there are many famous statues where the men and women are nude do they have problems with those too.  I also thought it was odd to hear that certain states won’t allow people to purchase vibrators for their own pleasure.  I don’t think that anyone should stop a person from doing what they want or pleasuring themselves.  I couldn’t believe that this was true when I first heard it so I told a friend and they told me that when they were in
Tennessee visiting friends they told them about how they weren’t allowed to buy vibrators for their own enjoyment.

[...] In response to this blog, while I agree with your point about not allowing people to purchase vibrators is completely wrong, the ability for a state to ban certain books from a public library should be allowed. While this may appear wrong, you have to look at it from their side and see that they are just trying to prevent items that they feel would be detrimental to peoples well being from getting out. To my knowledge, these states cannot ban the private selling of these books in places such as Barnes and Nobles but since a public library is a state funded institution, they can do what they want. yes but then you fall into the whats appropriate or inappropriate for one state is or is not for another, it would seem silly to be able to read a book in one state or county and not another wouldnt it?

on another note… the post above this seems about 180 from this post, what gives?
