I was watching television earlier tonight and commercial for
Victoria secret’s came on and I thought wow they really do have no limit to what they show on television. Yes granted it was only a commercial that was on for about 30 seconds but still in those 30 seconds it really shows a lot more then a person may think. It’s a girl making sexual movements in a bra and underwear and many people see no problem to that and it really doesn’t bother me either, but you never know who is sitting next to you that this may not be appropriate for them to see. I started to think more about it and then I remembered during the holiday season the Victoria secret commercial is something that is very sexual and can be borderline pornographic. They usually show a number of women in this commercial wearing new hot items that women will want to buy. While doing this they all have little sexual sayings that they whisper to make the commercial more appealing, they are also playing in like silk or lying on a bed while saying these things. It makes me think who they are trying to target in this type of commercial the women who they are actually selling the bras and underwear to or to their husbands/boyfriends who will end up buying this sexy lingerie for them. I don’t understand what they are trying to go for by making things this sexual and yes sex does sell but sometimes they take it a little too far in how sexy they get.

I was watching a rerun of an episode of desperate housewives the other day and I was thinking in my head whether or not this material was appropriate for television. ABC is known for being a family television station and this show was being aired at 9 pm when I know from experience that many children are usually still awake. Children tend to flip through channels and stop to watch shows that they seem interested in, and yes they do have those parent controls on televisions now but how many parents actually sit there and spend the time to set it up. What really shocked me was that in this episode they showed a woman running around in a little bra and underwear being her husband for sex. That is something that people tend to see in pornographic videos not on a family television show. Yes this show is more geared to the older crowd but many young children do watch this show with their parents. As much as I love this show I believe that shows like this should be put on at a later time when children are more likely to be sleeping, giving them a less of a risk of watching the show. I strongly believe in protecting children from seeing sex related material on television. I think parents need to pay attention to what their children watch and protect them from seeing obscene things on TV, even if it is just a woman in her bra and underwear. To some young boys that is exciting for them to see on TV. Our society believes strongly in protecting our children from harmful things, and TV is a big one even though many people don’t believe it to be.

Tennessee visiting friends they told them about how they weren’t allowed to buy vibrators for their own enjoyment.

Washington DC that he just got back from. I was excited to hear about his trip until he told me about something that happened with a few boys on the trip that really disturbed me. He was telling me that while on the trip the kids were allowed to bring their typical electronics that they all have today, cell phones, PSP’s, ipods, especially the new hot video ipod. What happened on my brothers’ trip was that a few of the young boys on the trip with him who are the same age as him were caught with pornography movies on their video ipods. I was in complete shock when he told me this I didn’t know what to say. I was also really disturbed that this is capable of being done with these video ipods, like what is next that these kids are going to be able to download pornography onto. It really bothers me how it’s so easy for kids these days to access porno on the web. I know a lot of my brother’s friends tell their parents that they are buying things for video games online when instead they are really buying porno videos. Why can’t these websites make it harder for people to buy and access their websites, I think its disgusting how a kid 13 years old is able to get a hold of these videos so easily.

Once again I have come across something on TV that I find kind of odd that they are allowed to show on TV it’s the new show “The Girls Next Door” which features Hugh Heffner’s girlfriends. Granted it’s on after 10pm but I know many kids these days don’t go to bed before that time and this is show is on basic cable. I know that my brother who is 14 years old granted he is old enough to watch what he wants now but I still think it’s a little disturbing for kids to be watching this show. Yes they don’t really show much of naked girls or anything on it but it depicts something that in real life does not go on. Not everyone is as rich and Hugh and not everyone has 3 girlfriends and everyone is ok with it. Why is it because he is the creator of playboy that this is ok for him to do this? It is his life and he is allowed to do with it what he pleases but what kind of role model is he if he is showing everyone his life and how it is “normal” for him to have 3 girlfriends who all live with him, besides the fact that these girls are less then half his age I think its disgusting how people think its ok for him to live like this, like there is nothing wrong with what he is doing. If any other male decided to do that they would be looked and judged completely differently then Hugh, why is that they are males also.

The other day I was watching MTV and it was a rerun of Meet the Barkers and on this show its about a married couple and their life together. Well with this episode they were doing a photo shoot for a new clothing line that the husband has created and wants to get it recognized and well known. So the wife decides to help him out in creating this huge photo shoot with models, modeling off the clothing. One of the models that they actually used was in playboy along with the wife used to be in playboy. What they had one of these models do was basically taking pictures naked with just the logo of the brand fake tattooed all over her body. If MTV didn’t do the blurs on the models nipples and other areas, every now and then while the she was moving positions this episode could have been viewed as pornography. I think it is kind of funny things that shows can get away with by just putting blur spots on a persons private area or by having them hold themselves.

Technically thinking about it, I love the show “Sex and the City” but when listening to these lectures and what people consider pornography that show can really be considered in some senses porn. Granted they never showed a full body shot of someone naked but you saw enough. Not one episode would go buy without you seeing some naked body part, or even hear or see one of the characters having sex for that matter. Even though they didn’t show the actions of sex because they would a lot of the times have sheets or blankets covering them the noises and the movements that were being made you knew they were having intercourse. Why was this show not considered pornography then?

In lecture 8 you talk about how there are many different niches in the net. When thinking about it there are many different ways that websites go about in trying to attract customers. Yet for some reason when those customers decide to purchase the right to view your site they are still ashamed of themselves that’s why many people chose the option of the purchase not showing up on their credit card bill. If they are sooo ashamed of purchasing rights to the view the site then why look at it at all. I do think its creative though how these site come up with ways to get people to look at them. You can just be looking at any normal site and in the banner you will see a little thumbnail picture of a naked women or man, which will then a lot of the times draw peoples attention and they will click on it. The only problem though with sites doing this is that a young kid can be on the internet and all of a sudden these pop-ups come on. Yes there are pop-up blockers but they don’t all work, so at the same time that I think the websites are being creative I also think they are wrong for possibly subjecting an innocent kid to look at pornography.

Not until after watching lecture 6 did it occurred to me that the ASCll public files were used back in the day to create pornographic images. I know people use them all the time now to show off sexual things. You can log onto facebook or even myspace and look at someone’s wall and 9 times out of 10 you are guaranteed to see something created out of letters and numbers showing some sort of something sexual on their walls posted by one of their friends or someone just wanting to be stupid and funny. I never realized till now that this has been happening for years I just thought this was a funny thing that people did to piss off other people it didn’t really occur to me that it had to have started somewhere otherwise no one would know how to create such things. I also found it interesting how you mentioned towards the end of the lecture that many people used to think that women were not into watching pornographic videos and a number of times they were asked to leave areas because one was going to be shown. I don’t get why people think that women don’t watch porn videos because the people in the videos are women who is to say that they don’t watch them, if they are willing to be in them. It makes the assumption that women are not open to their sexual side as much as men are which I think is completely not true.
